Default throttle position sensor

1996 mercury 175hp efi. The book I have says the ohms value should be 800 to 1200 at closed throttle, I get 10,000 ohms. The voltage test with temp. sensor disconnected and key switch on, I get 7.43volts. Neither of these values change while stroking the throttle. Am I doing something wrong or do I have a bad sensor. My problem is rough running at idle and excess smoke. I've had the motor checked at a mercury repair shop but am not happy with results.

you gotta be doing somthing wrong, exactly WHAT did the dealer say?there is a way to adjust the oil pump , it sounds to me like your pumping way to much oil, unless its a 2cycle? I just dont see a tps problem, that would'nt cause a rough idle.dirty carbs, timing, bad plugs ,even bad gas,but a tps?

It is a 2 cycle and it's fuel injected, no carbs. According to book the throttle position sends a signal to the ECU unit which will change lean or rich according to position.

What did the dealer say? Did they put it on a diagnostic?I realise and have dealt with this before,is the timing correct and is it advancing properly, there ARE quite a few things it could be ,including the ecu module,if you have the acess to another one change it ,if not get a meter and start checking voltage,I had a bad ground and it reeked havoc till I found it,either that or break out the bible(your service manuel) and start there,it can be very time consuming and even detremental to your motor if you don't know what you are doing, the last and most important piece of advice I can give you is what I try to instill in my customers, you can cause more damage and expense trying to figure it out yourself than to pay a professional to get it done, please remember,it does not take long to destroy a power head and then your talking thousands of dollar for somthing that may have cost a couple hundred to fix.
