Question Charts on older Garmin 198c

Going out of Santa Cruz up off of Davenport to fish for Dungeness crabs. The chart in and around Santa Cruz is full color with all the normal GPS map info. As I run north, I cross over a sharp line and then I get the basemap. Plane looking map without info.

Is this normal, or can I guess that the internal maps are faulty. I'm not sure how much coverage the old 198c's in their memory
